Band course descriptions
YEAR ONE
Cadet Band
Prerequisite: None
Open to: All
Length: 1 year
Credit: 2 (music/PE)
Cadet Band is aimed to develop students with little or no experience in music achieving a level that helps direct students into one of the two higher ensembles. Beginning band instrumentalists will be accepted into all appropriate ensembles, and given student guides and teacher mentors to work with to develop both technical skill and aesthetic awareness sufficient to become an active participant in the class explorations. Members will be given group and individual instruction in the fundamentals of music and the techniques of playing a band instrument. Students can choose to substitute Band for Physical Education each year. They must fill out a request for a PE waiver in the Guidance Office in order to take advantage of this. Band Camp is offered during the summer following completion of one year of Cadet Band. Piano, organ, drums and/or guitar are not taught in this class.

Cadet Percussion
Prerequisite: At least 1 Year of Previous Experience and Audition with Band Director.
Enrollment: (limited to 18)
Open to: All

Cadet band percussion is a part of the concert and symphonic bands allowing percussion and music fundamentals to be taught the entire year. It is open to students, who are not currently enrolled or may be enrolled concurrently with either concert or symphonic band. This course is offered for the full year with a proficiency exam to be completed by the end of the first semester in order to continue participation in the class second semester. Students will learn to read music through multiple percussion instruments including drum line, concert and urban world instruments.

This intermediate level ensemble is geared to developing the fundamentals of instrumental performance. Students are required to participation in concerts and after school rehearsals and festivals. Students can choose to substitute Band for Physical Education each year. They must fill out a request for a PE waiver in the Guidance Office in order to take advantage of this.

This is the premier instrumental performance group for District 215. A high level of instrumental accomplishments will be expected. This course will deal with much of the same material as the Concert Band, but it will be more comprehensive, going into more depth of material and use of primary resources. Students are required to participate in Marching Band as well as weekly after school rehearsals, concerts and festivals are also required. Students can choose to substitute Band for Physical Education each year. They must fill out a request for a PE waiver in the Guidance Office in order to take advantage of this.

Colorguard (Marching Band)
Prerequisite: Auditions with Director/Summer Band Camp
Enrollment: (limited to 35)

Marching Band/Colorguard is the visual ensemble of the North Band Program. Through a team effort, students will create and perform to music through visual movement and equipment. Students study and develop skills while creating visual routines to music with body and auxiliary equipment such as flags, pipes, and hoops. Students are required to participate in Marching Band as well as weekly after school rehearsals. Concerts and festivals are also required. Students must audition and be approved by Director. Students can choose to substitute Band for Physical Education each year. They must fill out a request for a PE waiver in the Guidance Office in order to take advantage of this.
